Western Market - An Edwardian architecture. A place with full of nostalgia.

Hong Kong, which has experienced vicissitudes of life, has retained many buildings with full of nostalgia with the changes of the times, and "Western Market" in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong is one of them. Now let's introduce it to you by HongKongFootprint.com.

"Western Market" was originally the office building of the Harbour Office, and was later converted into a traditional market, also known as "Sheung Wan Market". It has been the main place for local residents to buy their living needs for many years. The traditional market was then closed and rebuilt into its current appearance. The current "Western Market" is not only a classical and elegant shopping mall, but also a concentrated place for selling special handicrafts.

"Western Market" was built in the British Edwardian architectural style. In addition to being a building during the period of the British implemented colonial rule over Hong Kong, it is also one of the oldest existing traditional market buildings in Hong Kong. Due to its long history, it has been rated as a declared monument in Hong Kong, and it is also a frequently recommended historical monument or nostalgic attraction in tourism introductions.

The entire building is built of red bricks, and uses the color and texture of the stone to create a multi-color effect, coupled with the large round arch of the main entrance and beautiful stained glass. Especially when the weather is fine, the soft light is reflected into the interior through the stained glass, showing a more elegant feeling and a simple feeling.

"Western Market" originally only had two floors, but during the renovation, the designer took advantage of the high floor. A floor was added in the middle of the two floors, and then the top floor was opened to add a floor. Under the premise of not affecting the appearance, the original two-storey building was transformed into a four-storey building.

Nowadays, "Western Market" has added many theme restaurants and many specialty shops. The first floor mainly sells specialty snacks and nostalgic collectibles, while the second floor is a small shop selling traditional cloth. The third and fourth floors are a grand restaurant with full of nostalgia. In particular, this restaurant is very suitable for weddings. The nostalgic decoration and retro style make people feel like returning to Hong Kong in the past.

If you also want to go shopping here, it is recommended to take the MTR to Sheung Wan Station and leave at Exit B. After that, walk along Des Voeux Road Central towards the direction of Sai Ying Pun for about 5 minutes.
